Warning to Marketing Companies and Businesses on Environmental Labeling and Claims

We all know that the Federal Trade Commission guards us against deceptive advertising, especially in things like Weight Loss Programs, Health Products and Business Opportunities. Many times the FTC goes over board, attacking honest companies, and other times they catch a scam artist red-handed.

What about environmental claims, you know the marketers that go after Green Consumers who want to help the environment and buy good products? Well, the Federal Trade Commission is looking into this too. From now on, if you cannot prove it, most likely you cannot say it on the Internet, in an advertisement or on the radio or TV. Why all the fuss, well apparently it is being abused.

Meanwhile the FTC is creating new “advertising rules” for those who claim “environmental friendly” on their labels, and that is going to cause alarm and concern to many companies who are not walking the walk. What the heck, perhaps buying green products is in your future.

This will very much will affect the Venture Capital crowd, AL Gore & Associates and the little guy, The Green Entrepreneur, who is trying, but got caught by the “rule maker - rule breaker” business as usual games. Accountability is the name of their game and deceptive advertising is something they are going after, this time in the name of the environment.

Will this make businesses walk their talk or will it cause companies to stop trying and go for price and do little if anything to help the environment? Will consumers pay more for green products and services or will we simply find fewer companies willing to go out of their way? Think on this, it is rather serious if you consider the ramifications of what this means to the future of Green.

The Green, Green Mortgages At Home

A ‘green mortgage’ is a mortgage that is favorable to the environment. This means that lenders will plant a certain number of trees per loan; the idea being to offset its carbon footprint. They may also make a donation, on behalf of the borrower, to environmental causes, or the lender can offer funding to green property developments. Green mortgages are sometimes, although not exclusively, offered on houses that are in someway ethical or sustainable. Also most green mortgage lenders will not work with businesses that are known to pollute the environment.

Currently there are only three lenders that offer a full green mortgage package, with less than 20% of mortgage brokers aware that green mortgages even exist. But that’s not to say that you will be paying for the privilege of having a green mortgage, as already lenders are offering competitive rates.

Green mortgages are slowly becoming more popular as the public become more environmentally aware and some commentators expect ethical, sustainable and green mortgages will one day be the common form of home loan.

Home owners are also becoming aware of the benefits of making their home more ethical. Energy, and subsequently money, can be saved by simply having a well insulated roof. Recently it has been announced that the government plans to relax its planning laws top make it easier for home owners to add solar panels to their properties.

Next year will see the compulsory introduction of EPC’s (Energy Performance Certificates). Lenders and energy companies will be able to offer lump sums to home owners to make their properties more energy efficient. This coincides with the introduction of HIP’s (Home Information Packs) that all sellers will have to provide; property will also be given an A-G rating on how energy efficient they are. Homeowners who receive a low energy efficient rating on will be able to act and improve their properties score.

Learning The Basics About Green Building

Green building almost seems like a fad these days. With all of the emphasis on helping the environment, it seems like being as environmentally conscious as you can is the popular thing to do. But when it comes to green building, there are a lot of ways to change your current living or work environment into something more energy efficient. Here are three ways that you can add green building to your life as well as to your home.

Water conservation is the first step in green building. Because the heating and cooling of water is something that takes up a lot of energy, you need to find new ways to perform these tasks. There are a number of ‘green’ solutions for this problem. Some homes install systems that are solar powered in order to heat and cool water in this way. You can also choose to recycle your water through your home in order to limit the use of water each day. This kind of system will take the water from your daily showers, clean it, and then put it back into use in the home for washing dishes, for example. You can also create a system that catches water from the environment to help you get more water.

Green Building

Next in green building is to create energy efficient electricity. Though everyone would like to install solar panels on their home, it’s not always cost effective for home owners. Solar panels are expensive and installing them to provide constant energy to your home is not always the best option when you don’t live in a sunny environment. Talk with local solar energy providers to see if this is an option for you. If not, or if you’re just not ready for solar power, you should look into changing your light bulbs to halogen bulbs and buy energy efficient appliances. These appliances will have energy efficiency stickers on them.

Another great way to add green building to your life is to consider the waste that you create each day. Instead of simply throwing out everything, you will want to create a recycling setup that collects recyclable items. You will also want to find a compost container that will allow your food waste and paper products to be turned into rich fertilizers.

The Basics of Buying a Green Home

Is there a Green Mortgage?

Yes! Unfortunately, only 3 lenders currently offer this new kind of loan, with less than 25% of mortgage brokers aware that green mortgages even exist. The borrower won’t have to pay for this new incentive, as the lenders are starting to offer more competitive rates. Title companies are starting to offer a donation on settlement statements to environmentally friendly organizations. Green mortgages are becoming a new trend as our world becomes more aware of its changing environment.

Eco Friendly Houses - What Is A Green Building?

What is a green building and why should you care? Why are people building efficient green homes? What is the number one reason for the increased demand for eco friendly houses? The answers may surprise you!

What is a Green Building? A green building (the noun) is a building that has been specifically designed to save energy, promote healthy indoor air and have much less impact on the environment.

Green building (the verb) is mainly a construction term used to describe whole house system design and techniques that use eco friendly, or green building, materials and components.

The following terms are pretty much interchangeable when talking about houses: eco friendly houses, eco friendly home, eco home, eco house, green house, green building a house, green home designs, or building efficient green homes.

Here are some great examples of using green materials for the home:

1. recycled glass counter tops - stylish and eco friendly

2. bamboo flooring - grows quickly (sustainable) with durability comparable to hardwood

3. eco friendly furniture - made from sustainable or recycled materials, or certified wood

4. tankless water heaters - water is heated on demand, saving energy

5. low flow shower heads and LED faucets that turn on and off automatically

6. energy saving appliances and light fixtures

7. renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power

Why are people building efficient green homes? Why eco friendly houses? As I mentioned, the answer may surprise you. Most people think the number one reason to “go green” is for the environment or to save energy…but, according to a recent survey done by the folks at Building Green TV and RCLCO, the number one reason people are building eco friendly houses is for health reasons! In fact, a full 42% of those surveyed replied that health was the number one reason to build a green home. Only 17% said they would be motivated by energy savings, and only 12% for the environment!

What do eco friendly houses have to do with health? According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the list below contains just some of the things that may be causing your family health problems inside your home:

Radon, Environmental Tobacco Smoke, Biologicals, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Organic Gases, Respirable Particles, Formaldehyde, Pesticides, Asbestos, Lead, and Chlorine.

In fact, the EPA estimates that the pollution levels inside your home could be 3-70 times the outdoor pollution levels in major cities - yuk!

Makes you want to open a window now, doesn’t it?
